@Ye dropped an apology in the form of an ad in the Wall Street Journal the other day. Here are the thoughts from someone who never stopped being a fan and who has bipolar 1 more severely than Ye.
Anyone who might think, “How can you still be a fan after the MAGA hat, White Lives Matter, slavery was a choice, a nazi song, and selling swastika merch!” let me repeat, “who has bipolar 1 more severely than Ye.” πππ
I saw some takes on YouTube…
* His apology to the Black community was weak.
* He’s trying to sell an album
* He’s trying to get on the good side of businesses
Those all might be true, but I see past all of that. Most people have no idea how intense and surreal bipolar 1 manic episodes can be. I had a manic episode where I went back in time and spoke to Einstein. Once Jay Leno started talking to me through the television, and I noticed the Aibo I manically bought (a $1,500 US electric dog from Sony released around 1999) started tracking my movements. There was a time when Bill Gates was following me through billboard advertisements (if I can see it, it can see me!).
Don’t get me started on my manic journey with the Jewish community… π³ Here’s the thing. You don’t need misinformation to make up wild stories when manic. Your mind has you covered! π The amount of propaganda, disinformation, and conspiracy theories about Jews is staggering. Mania + conspiracies is bad. Mania + Jewish conspiracies. π³π³π³ I had my Jewish phase around 2011 and kept it mostly to myself. When Kanye was going off about Jews, I was like, “Ah… He’s reached the Jews.” ππ
No lie, Jews are kind of the final boss for conspiracy and disinformation. There are other fun places to go, like the idea that the moon is a hollow satellite placed by reptilians for mind control, but most people think that’s crazy. Going hard on Jews has a whole world of people, facts, conspiracies, and disinformation to support that journey for your whole life.
He didn’t start with Jews, though. He clearly got caught up in conspiracy theories about Black people. When you’re hanging out with conspiracy theorists focused on the Black community, the Jewish community is right next door. Thinking about it now, he might have said so little about his Black conspiracy phase because he’s most embarrassed by it. Embarrassment is the first thing you notice with post mania clarity.
There’s something I’ve long said about mania. You’re thinking at a thousand miles a minute. It feels GREAT when it’s focused. I believe we got to see the result of manic focus in My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The problem with thinking that fast is that when a piece of bad information gets into the system, it spirals out of control. One truthful stat about Black or Jewish people wrapped in a disingenuous package quickly gives way to total delusion. Eventually, you’re living in an alternate reality. This can last months, years, and even decades. Being a genius only makes it worse because no one can talk you off the ledge. Maybe the only way out is hitting rock bottom.
And that’s my most generous interpretation of the apology. That Ye’s hit a version of “rock bottom”. The old Kanye finally got through the new Kanye… so to speak. π
It sounds like his wife was a major part of this, but I’m sure there were many others. In 2022, I hit my own version of rock bottom, unlike any episode before it. The experience in 2022 got me through the manic episode at the end of last year. I hope this is the kind of clarity Ye has now. Time will tell.
If I’m being real, I’m actually impressed with how subdued Ye’s manic episodes have been. π If I had a billion dollars during any of my episodes… π³π³π³ I could have done way “better” than a Super Bowl ad for a swastika t-shirt. π³π³π³πππ That said, and hate me if you want, when I saw that, I was like, “Nice.” π Game respects game. π I’m glad it wasn’t me tho. π
