I don’t have the post I thought I was going to have for you today because last week I learned that I love editing. I suppose I like the, as the photo says, “edit… rewrite… edit… rewrite… edit…” process. That post is currently sitting at 1,400 words. The number of sections that I’ve written and removed is also sitting at 1,400 words!
I’ve almost never spent any time writing, editing, and rewriting. I had a single English 101 course in college where my writing was critiqued and the one thing I learned from that course is that it’s hard to communicate! Precise writing takes time and effort and that’s precisely what I’m doing with the piece I’m working on.
What I’ve learned over this course of this past week of daily editing is that writing and editing takes on a life of its own. I thought I knew what I was writing about at the start of the piece, but now it’s gone in a completely different direction. It’s strange. It feels like it’s totally out of control! It also keeps giving birth to new ideas that might end up being new pieces. If I keep editing and rewriting every day this next week I won’t be surprised if I have 3,000 words on the cutting room floor to support a 1,500 word piece.
That’s all I got for you this week. We’ll see what happens next week…
I see you have discovered that editing is a lot harder than just putting words on the paper. Good job!
